Ruka is in Kuusamo, in North Ostrobothnia, just south of Lapland. Ruka's tourism site counts 400 km of groomed official snowmobile routes around Ruka and Kuusamo, free to use, plus about 100 km of private routes used by the safari companies.
The snowmobile route fee is voluntary: Ruka's tourism site puts it at €50, and the money goes to grooming the routes. The official route map with grooming status is at kuusamo.fluentprogress.fi.
On a marked snowmobile route the driver needs at least a T-class licence, which a car licence includes, and the law sets the minimum age at 15. Rental companies that state an age ask drivers to be 18, and Stella Polaris rents to younger drivers with a parent's consent.
Kuusamo Safaris needs at least 4 people per departure, and a pick-up from your accommodation is quoted separately. The prices of Ruka Safaris, Ruka Adventures and Lammintupa were read from their booking calendars for mid-January 2027. Safaris run from December to April, snow and ice permitting, and a pre-booked bus runs between Kuusamo airport and Ruka with the scheduled flights.
